A few definitions:
Discovery Service: a discovery service is a tool that searches all of the library's online holdings at once. It casts a wide net and is great for finding single articles or as starting place for your research. The discovery service we use at Heritage is called Primo.
Reference Sources: A reference source, like Credo, can provide answers to simple questions. Reference sources summarize common knowledge and can serve as a great introduction to a new topic. These sources are great for helping you choose a topic and learn enough about your topic that you will be able to search for more advanced and specific information.
Databases: At its core, a database is a structured set of data. When we refer to databases in research, we generally refer to a collection of scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles. Many of our databases are provided by EBSCO or ProQuests.
Peer-reviewed Journal Articles: Articles written by experts (professors, scholars, or professionals) that have been reviewed by other experts to ensure the credibility of the information. These articles can be found through Primo or our databases.
Unit 1 focuses on the beginning of the research process. The tutorial videos will demonstrate how to use Primo to locate resources from the Heritage University Library's physical and online collections and how to use Credo Reference to begin the research process.
Once you have completed this unit you will be able to utilize Primo to find a wide-range of various resources and locate single, specific-topic resources, including books, eBooks, and scholarly articles. You will also be able to use Credo Reference to familiarize yourself with a broad topic and then focus the topic to a relate to your research question.
